Manduca First or Manduca XT baby carrier

Since the Manduca Xt is so strong it might assume that this carrier poses no competition to the Manduca XT. However, that is far from the case—and we’ll explain why below.

The Manduca First is our personal favorite. When put on correctly, a newborn's legs cannot over-spread; the First’s newborn insert prevents this, keeping the legs safely within the carrier. Unfortunately, we often see over-spreading with the Manduca XT, which is why we generally do not recommend that carrier for newborns. Like the XT, the Manduca First grows with the child, though it lacks the additional "ZipIn" insert. It also features a back panel extension, though it is not reinforced; those who really want that visual extra can purchase it separately as an accessory. The XT’s seat width is continuously adjustable. We often find that the seat width shifts after putting the carrier on if the baby isn't positioned with their legs in the proper "M-position" (squat-spread position); some parents even sew the seat in place to prevent this. With the Manduca First, there is no slipping, making it easier and faster to put on. When carrying a baby on your back, a secure, perfect fit is crucial—and this is where the First truly excels. The XT features elastic loops on the strap ends to keep them from dangling loosely, but we rarely see parents actually take the trouble to tuck the straps into these loops. Consequently, while they are a nice feature, we don't consider them essential. The buckles on the Manduca First are also padded. In our view, the only truly compelling feature of the XT is the extra seat width achieved when the seat insert is fully extended; this is an advantage if you plan to carry your child for a long time.

Our Verdict:

The extra features on the Manduca XT look great and certainly have their merits.

However, in terms of value for money, we definitely lean towards the Manduca First. The same goes for its simplicity and how quickly it can be put on. We love the sturdiness of this compact baby carrier :-)

Before the Manduca XT came along, the First was marketed in a similar way—except for the integrated accessories. See for yourselves:

Manduca First – the baby carrier

The Manduca First is a great option for parents looking for a carrier that grows with their child. Thanks to its adjustable seat and back extension, it can serve as head and neck support for newborns or as shoulder support for older children. The back extension can be opened quietly while the carrier is in use, making it easy to stabilize restless babies. Additionally, the Manduca First is made from soft organic cotton, making it gentle on your child's skin. Manduca’s signature sleep hood provides extra support for your child's head and neck when they fall asleep in the front-carry position. Overall, the Manduca First is a versatile and comfortable baby carrier that you can use for years.
